Day 5: Maintaining the Status Quo (The 1990’s)

Activity 1: Hiking Tongariro
tongariro.jpg
In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro, was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit! Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list of at least 5 items.
Hiking at Tongariro
1. Food
2. Water
3. A hat
4. First Aid
Spare shoes or clothes.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how to stay safe while you’re hiking.
Tips before a Trip
Plan your trip: So you don't get unorganised and you know where to go.

Tell someone: So if you get lost a least someone knows where you are.

Weather: So you don't go to the place and it rains of storm or even hail.

Sufficient suppliers: So you don't have to get hungry or thirsty or even get dirty and have spare clothes.

Activity 2: Leading New Zealand
In the 1990s, four different individuals served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand – Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley.

On your blog, write a short profile of one of our former Prime Ministers. Upload a photo of them with your post. Click on this link to find a copy of the template. Click on file and then click make a copy. This will save the blank template to your Google Drive so that you can fill it in. Post the completed template to your blog to earn points for this activity.

  1. Hey there Opeti thank you for creating a list of important items you will need to take with you when hiking the Tongariro Crossing. You have included some very sensible items, well done.

What sort of food might you take? You will need to take some food that is going to give you lots of energy. I would probably take a big sandwich, some nuts, fruit, muesli bars and maybe even some delicious chocolate.

It sounds like you know what you're doing. Have you been hiking before? It's definitely a good idea telling someone where you are going, just in case something goes wrong. Taking a fully charged cellphone is probably a good idea as well. You never know what might happen.

    Thanks, Billy

  2. Kia Ora Opeti,

I'm pleased to see that you've selected the honourable Helen Clark. However, when I click on the link that you've provided, I don't have permission to view your template. Could you potentially give me access to this, so that I can reward you with full points?

Helen Clark is now doing some pretty incredible things with her time, do you have any idea what that might be?

    Cheers,

    Jordan.
